Meet Amari.
Amari is an aspiring Music Technology major at LaGuardia Community College, and an inaugural recipient of an award from the Marcy Houses Memorial Scholarship Fund. Amari loves to sing, and her inspiration to pursue music are ‘old school’ masters like the iconic Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, and newer stars like Alicia Keys. Smart beyond her years, Amari says she hopes to master the business side of music as well with her college education.
The best thing about being in college for Amari is that she is finding her independence and proving her initiative to succeed. A self-described hands on person, although challenged by virtual learning, Amari has become assertive in seeking out her professors for assistance when necessary. The sacrifices of her mother while raising Amari and her sister serve as inspiration for Amari to succeed. Amari, whose name connotes peace, positivity and light, hopes to spread that positivity to others with her gift of music.
Meet Naomi.
Naomi Diaz is a mentee of the Marcy Houses Scholarship Fund. Naomi is a pet lover, and has a penchant for reptiles, including leopard geckos, lizards and frogs. At the time of her application, Naomi was caring for a very sick Rocket, with much success through the next year, an experience that encouraged Naomi to consider study to become a Veterinarian Technician. Naomi is a focused self-starter as her determination to care for Rocket included researching his care via the internet. Naomi is also outgoing which is exhibited by her willingness to join chemistry clubs that meet on WhatsApp.
Naomi graduated from The Uncommon Charter High School and is currently a student at LaGuardia Community College where she studies chemistry. Naomi is very inspired by her mother and is determined to follow the example she has set in completing her studies. Naomi is opened to looking at other areas of study during her Freshman year.
